This month marks the graduation of the first cohort from our Financial Plan Course, a free online program where students learned how to create a working budget and build a long-term financial plan.

We created this course to give back to our community and to be part of the solution when it comes to helping people take control of their finances. It’s open to anyone and designed to be flexible, accessible, and empowering.

We live in the richest country in the world, but too many people are navigating the world of money without a map. If you’re like me, you see it all around you—friends, neighbors, and loved ones who are struggling financially, not because they’re lazy or irresponsible, but because no one ever taught them how to plan ahead.

And when you break it down, this isn’t just about money. It’s about peace of mind. It’s about having confidence when life throws you a curveball and knowing you’re prepared financially, emotionally, and practically.

Just how bad is the problem? According to numerous surveys, most Americans can’t afford an unexpected $600 expense. Nearly half the country is afraid to even check their bank account. And that includes a surprising number of people earning six figures who are still living paycheck to paycheck.

When I was in high school, economics was one of the hardest and most rewarding classes I ever took. I still think about Mrs. Stanley, who taught us the fundamentals of investing, budgeting, and financial literacy. Those lessons have stuck with me for more than 20 years, and they’ve made a difference in my life every step of the way.
